Hacienda Nápoles, era la hacienda del narcotraficante Pablo Escobar.
Después de su muerte(durante su captura), esta se convirtió en un parque temático, el cual cuenta con un zoológico (con sus famosos hipopótamos), un hotel y un museo.

What got you started?

Growing up as a Jehovah's Witness. I was surrounded by all these crazy images of the end of the world: who could resist that?

What was your big breakthrough?

Landing in a certain department at Glasgow School of Art in 1985. It had been the environmental art department, but when I got there no one was looking after us. So it was as if a bunch of kids had been given an empty house for four years – we had to define ourselves.

What's the greatest threat to art today?

Smug answers.

Is the art world too money-oriented?

If you attach the word "world" to anything, it sounds like money – the word has become a cipher for industry. It's not essentially to do with money: if you're a kid who goes to a museum and tries to draw a peregrine falcon, that's your art world. But people who buy art should buy it like they buy vegetables – they should do it every day, and they should love what they buy.

Is there an art form you don't relate to?

My girlfriend is a soprano, so I'm trying really hard to relate to classical music. I grew up with my mum and dad's old 78s by Enrico Caruso and Mario Lanza, but composers like Stockhausen are still new territory for me.

What's the biggest myth about artists?

That we're sauvage and unintelligent.

What's the worst thing anyone ever said about you?

Some terrible things have been said, but I think the worst is still to come. Don't you wake up in the mornings thinking that your life is good, but that it's all going to end some day?

Which living artist do you most admire?

Anyone who's still alive and still making art. I don't necessarily admire the art, but the artist I always admire.

What one song would work as the soundtrack to your life?

Bernard Herrmann's soundtrack to Hitchcock's Vertigo.

What's your favourite film?

At the moment I'm obsessed with The Third Man by Carol Reed, and F for Fake by Orson Welles. It's interesting for a British person to live in Berlin, as I do, and to think about ghosts and disappearance.

What advice would you give a young artist?

Don't stop, don't stop, don't stop.

Me gustó este artículo porque habla sobre un colectivo que refleja un tipo de "artista contemporáneo". Algunas de sus características son. 

1) su objetivo es reivindicar a una minoría o clase no reconocida (en este caso a los negros). 

2) hacen una mezcla entre música, danza, artes visuales, etc. en sus presentaciones. 

3) se insertan en el espacio público y ahí hacen sus presentaciones. 

4) tienen una pinta excéntrica.

Black artists unleash MAS Hysteria

There’s a serious lack of recognition of artwork produced by black visual artists today; all you need to do is visit any local art gallery or museum for evidence to support this claim.

There is, however, one group that is aware of this problem and is taking steps to change it. The group is called SIXAHWI (as in “six of us”), a not-for-profit African-Canadian visual artist collective that began in 1993. Though only one original member, Ato Seitu, remains, the vision and goal is to revolutionize how the world sees and appreciates artwork produced by black visual artists, especially here in Canada.

Performing artist and SIXAHWI visual artist Ashley McKenzie-Barnes believes that now is the time for blacks to play a greater role in the Canadian art scene. “Part of the problem is that African-Canadians need to establish a greater presence as power players within the art market, not just as artists but in other key business roles,” says McKenzie-Barnes. “Black visual artists need to make greater efforts to showcase diversity in their works by producing art pieces that appeal to the ever-changing tastes of people within the artistic community who have grown accustomed to expecting certain work from visual artists of colour.”

With that recognition comes a comprehensive new plan developed by the group that includes increasing their membership and the continued development of a comprehensive art project in the making for four years.

In 2009, the group produced “Mas Hysteria,” an exhibit described by members as a “unique” and “unusual” exhibition that integrates elements of music, dance, drama and visual art into a single presentation. The two-venue showcase debuted at Nuit Blanche in October 2009, and later the same month at the Eleanor Winters Art Gallery at York University. The exhibit highlighted the evolution of Trinidad and Tobago’s mas, the world’s largest theatre of the street. The end goal of the display will be to draw attention to the artistic aspects of mas making, which are often overlooked.

Mas Hysteria, inspired by group member Ras Stone, is a multi-disciplinary art exhibit that will, in addition to more traditional arts displays, have wire sculptures and steel pan players in full mas costume. “These elements will serve to demonstrate how various creative aspects of mas making are examined and represented both historically and within a post-colonial context,” says Stone.

The collective feels that this exhibition, and the upcoming work promised by the group in the future, will contribute to the goal of achieving respect and demand for black art within both black communities and the wider public, thus turning a long-standing dream into reality.

“The show must go on. We have to keep pushing the wood in the fire,” says Seitu. “There is a saying in Jamaica:  If you want good your nose has to run.’ We are still pioneers in this time. What we are doing today is really for tomorrow’s generation.”

Regalos para "artistas"...

Hace aproximadamente un año me obsequiaron unos títeres de los grandes compositores. Vienen cuatro: Mozart, Beethoven, Verdi y Puccini. Estos títeres (y otros regalitos como tazas, playeras, mentas, libretitas  y peluches) son creados por la compañia The Unemployed Philosophers Guild y están en venta en lugares y librerías de prestigio como lo son El Péndulo y Gandhi. Esta fotografía  que hace referencia a la fuente de Duchamp,  toma lugar en la facultad de ciencias políticas y sociales de la UNAM, dejando atrás el espacio del museo, haciendo que no solamente la alta cultura tenga acceso a la reflexión que propone este gesto sino que se vuelve arte de masas dando una experiencia estética.

Evidentemente no sería la imagen del artista "actual" ya que el artista no es remunerado por esas horas de "producción en masa" pero podría existir la ganancia en la pieza propuesta. Lo veo en mí y en mis compañeros, como emergentes estamos en la necesidad de producir y producir no a manera de máquina pero si de manera constante con el fin de "tener qué exponer". Y a pesar de los obstáculos que se presentan y afectan a veces nuestra integridad somos sólo eso... artistas-productores.

ANIMAL

La revista ANIMAL incluye en sus portadas a varias  figuras "clave" para la construcción de nuestra cultura. Es interesante ver como productores de arte, coleccionistas, cantantes y boxeadores nutren un imaginario que parece disolverse cada vez  más entre públicos diferentes, los cuales pudieran pensarse ajenos unos a otros pero que cada vez encuentran más semejanzas entre sí.

70 Million - Hold Your Horses

Alondra De La Parra

Alondra De La Parra es una conocida y carismática directora de orquesta que es famosa no solo por su música, sino por haber estado casada con el hijo del ex presidente Ernesto Zedillo (se divorciaron hace un par de años). En estas imágenes se muestra el rostro de una bella y muy popular mujer  ( en la portada de una revista de sociales nacional y en la de su reciente disco). En el segundo la directora muestra un rostro alegre y "orgulloso" de su "patria" puesto que la música de su CD contiene grandes temas de la música clásica orquestal mexicana, entre los cuales destacan el Huapango de Moncayo, el Danzón no. 2 de Arturo Márquez y Sensemayá de Silvestre Revueltas, cabe añadir la presencia de "elementos" populares mexicanos en esta portada, entre los cuales se encuentran: Un balón de futbol, el Ángel de la Independencia y los colores patrios.
Esta es una de las concepciones que se hay de los músicos actuales en México: Elegante, fina, millonaria y con mucha fama.

Esta es una referencia que hace la diseñadora de modas mexicana María Vogel hacia el trabajo de videoarte de Bruce Nauman. Me parece interesante la percepción por parte de Vogel hacia la dimensión dancística de la obra de Nauman en relación con la conciencia corporal y demás. Pero lo que me parece más rescatable es la representación que se hace sobre el artista. La pasarela fue hecha en la galería Distrito 14.
